Vigorade CMF update & new shorts!

Hello world! I just realized we never posted the results from the CMF regionals this year. So down to brass tax.

We didn’t win anything; however, we were part of the top 16, so that means we’ll be going to the international finale again this summer!

Speaking of the CMF international finale: Here are two old movies, one of which was made during our trip to Los Angeles last year for CMF.

Recently we put the finishing touches on “Calvin,” the project we spent the summer writing and filming. Although Calvin may not be our best work, it’s nevertheless an achievement for us. We’d like to thank everyone who helped us make it, because we couldn’t have done it without you.

She was 15.

Back in March of this year, our friend Jeremy Inman asked Robbie and me (Jeff) to make a 1970’s Spider Man movie parody to be played during his feature length film: Super Hero Party Clown.

A few days ago Robbie and I wrapped our shoot for the 70’s segment, which consisted of an obligatory warehouse fight and an origin scene.

Robbie starred as the 70’s Arachnid-Man, and I was directing.

The first day of shooting was in the basement of the San Jose State theater, which was frightening because literally just as we walked in we saw a man putting up a sign for asbestos.

The second and final day was the warehouse fight, which was a lot of fun because we had so many resources at our disposal. Four actors as thugs, break away wooden boards, an entire empty pool filled with junk, and a jib for the camera.

We choreographed an entire fight scene that turned out beautifully. At one point Robbie gets a box on his head while three thugs smack him with boards. Check out the behind the scenes footage here.

I’ll hopefully post the segment online when it’s finished being edited by whoever it’s being handed off to. But for now I’ll leave you with a behind the scenes shot: Robbie being thrown through a fence.

New website, logo, and short film

Hey friends, many of you have probably noticed that we have a new, much more simple website design. That’s thanks to Reid Young of Fangamer and Starmen.net fame. We also have a brand new logo, thanks to Jonathan Magram.

We had been meaning to change our logo for a while, because the toxic rabbit didn’t make any sense. And after Jon having spent countless hours on concepts, we have this.

We’ve been spending our 2009 summer working a drama/comedy short film. We spent about 3 months writing, constantly reworking the script into different story ideas; eventually we decided on one a month ago. We entered preproduction a week ago, getting locations actors and the production design together.

Elliot Kane was cast as the lead character, Calvin. We had a meeting with him a few weeks ago and discussed the character along with doing a cold reading of the script. He did well but we still had a lot more work to do with his character and fixing up the story.

A few days later we figured preproduction should enter full gear, and it’d be best for us to start trying to find a supporting actress, and a restaurant to film at. We spoke with a few Denny’s managers, and decided on one with an extremely enthusiastic manager named Victor. The day after that, we went wardrobe shopping with Elliot Kane to get a better idea of what we thought his character would wear. We bought a jacket and dress shirt, because at the time our script took place after prom.

But ultimately four nights ago we realized the movie was going in a direction we didn’t like, and scrapped it. We’ve since reworked the story into something much more simple, tight, and relatable, all while keeping the same main character. We set out this summer trying to become better writers, and we seem to be progressing. We’ve realized the best thing to do during writing is to not let any crap slip through, period. Always be happy with every point in the script, and if you’re not, don’t be afraid to scrap it just because you worked so long and hard on it.

We’re hoping to shoot it this month, however we may need to settle for doing it later during the school year.
